(ABGESAGT) Die Andere Stadt – Alternative Zukünfte urbaner Mobilität

Ein »Speculative Design« Workshop

10.-11.3.2020, 10-17 Uhr, CityLAB

English Version below

Kontext

Background

(CANCELED) The other city – Alternative futures of urban mobility.

A „Speculative Design“ Workshop

10./11.03.2020, 10-17 hrs each, CityLAB Berlin

Context

The range of workshops, meetings and panels on the future of mobility is currently inflationary. Usually the same actors exchange their arguments and visions with great routine: self-driving cars, flying taxis, delivery drones, sharing services for different means of transport that satisfy micromobility – obviously climate-neutral and embedded in a green, aesthetic urban landscape with futuristic architecture, in which conspicuously few people are in the streets. This is how the automotive industry, mobility tech companies and leading research institutions visualize their visions of urban mobility. Such future visions are so established in our society, that it is difficult to imagine alternative futures.

Workshop goals and results

In a two-day workshop, we will use approaches from »Speculative Design« and »Design Fiction« to critically question the mainstream trends of future mobility, and make other realities and alternative scenarios tangible and experienceable with the help of prototypes. In the tradition of speculative design, the primary goal is not to generate specific solutions. Rather, initial positions and problems should be pointed out as a basis for the discussion of alternative futures in the context of mobility. We see Speculative Design not as an end, but as a »reframing« tool: alternative futures may be critical but open up positive visions at the same time, and with it, pave the way towards possible solutions.

Prototypes as speculative objects play an important role in this process. Prototypes implicitly materialize unfinished future artifacts that represent expected, desired or even preventable possibilities as tangible realities. These future artifacts can have different forms: Objects, interactive physical or digital interfaces, data or geo-visualizations, e.g. maps of fictive cities or entire landscapes. For the workshop, which will be moderated by a team of design researchers from the IDL // Interaction Design Lab of the Potsdam University of Applied Sciences, an easy-to-use toolkit for ideation and prototyping will be available. With this methodological approach, a complex social and economic topic should be critically and constructively questioned in a multi-perspective and tangible way. In the workshop, the mechanisms of design fiction and speculative design are expected to force the production of discursive objects and future scenarios that transcend borders and open discussions.

Participants and structure

The future of mobility is transdisciplinary and transcultural. Invited are all those who have ideas and wishes for the future mobility and want to share them with other interested participants, develop them further and make them tangible. Of course, no technological or programming knowledge or special design skills are required. The workshop will be held in German and English.

  • Day 1 | 10.03.2020: Impulses & Discussions, problems and group finding
  • Day 2 | 11.03.2020 Prototyping, scenario development and presentations

Background

The workshop is part of the interdisciplinary research project »PROTOTYP« of the Interaction Design Lab (IDL) of the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam, the Department of Media Sociology of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, the Munich Center for Technology in Society (MCTS) of the Technical University Munich, as well as the new German Museum Nuremberg („Das Zukunftsmuseum“). The project investigates the role of speculative design prototypes as storytelling and communication media of possible futures. The results of the research project are to be exhibited in the new German Museum Nuremberg („Das Zukunftsmuseum“) at the beginning of 2021.
